Senses

6 sessions | 60mns/session

Session 1: Sight

This session explores how we actually see with our brains, not just our eyes. Students learn about the anatomy of the eye, the concept of the blind spot, and how technology helps blind people "see" using sound.

Session 2: Communication

Students explore different ways humans and animals communicate, including vocal cords, sign language, body language, and even chemical signals. They learn how diseases like ALS affect speech and how people like Stephen Hawking used technology to communicate.

Session 3: Smell and Taste

This session explains how our senses of smell and taste work together to help us enjoy food. Students learn about the role of olfactory receptors and taste buds, and how diseases like COVID-19 affect smell.

Session 4: Touch

Students discover that touch is a complex sense mediated by the skin—our largest organ. The session covers different types of touch receptors and fun facts like tickling, phantom limbs, and animals that use touch in unique ways.

Session 5: Hearing & Balance

This session explains how we hear through the cochlea and how sound vibrations are transmitted. It also covers ear hygiene, hearing through bones, and the role of the inner ear in balance. Students explore music’s emotional impact and how hearing aids help those with hearing loss.

Session 6: Our Sixth Sense

Students explore proprioception—our hidden "sixth sense" that allows us to locate body parts without seeing them. The session dives into echolocation, gut feelings, and intuitive senses found in humans and animals. It concludes with a look at how technology mimics or enhances these abilities for the visually impaired.
